De La Salle University Clinches UAAP Badminton Title
After contesting the title for the past four years without winning, De La Salle University finally emerged as champions of the UAAP women’s badminton tournament after outlasting University of the East in almost straights sets last weekend during the final of the 72nd season of this prestigious tournament. The match was held at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
This served as De La Salle team’s, known as Lady Archers, fourth title overall. The last time they won was in 2005. The Most Valuable Player award went to Rachel Guerrero of University of the East.
In the earlier matches, Calimlim defeated Jesa Sampurna 21-10, 21-10 and Racquel Guerrero beat Geli Ramos of De La Salle 21-13, 21-15.
Partnering up with teammate Danica Bolos, Calimlim showed that she’s a contender with her badminton racket as the pair beat Fatima Cruz and Gerrero 21-18, 14-21, 21-15 to place La Salle in a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Archers eventually won the other doubles match to seal the victory.
However, in the men’s side, it was University of Santo Tomas Tigers who emerged as champions against De La Salle with a tight 3-2 score. University of Santo Tomas is a known powerhouse in badminton after having won back to back titles in 2004 and 2005.
