The 2016 Olympics is one of the most anticipated upcoming sporting events. In Newport, Wales, many groups have been pushing for the recognition of their chosen sport. The European Ryder Cup, for example, presented their bid to the Olympic committee as early as the first week of June. Cup Captain Colin Montgomerie headed the group to promote the bid for golf in the upcoming Olympics. Montgomerie accounts that the group has been specifically requested to device an effective bidding plan that will be presented to the deciding international Olympic committee. Their group has the support of the local organizers, including Peter Dawson, the Royal and Ancient chief and executive head, and Tim Finchem, the PGA tour commissioner.
The international Olympic committee opened its doors to the sporting proponents last June 15 to 16 in Lausane, Switzerland. In this meeting, specific groups came forward to present their respective sports to gain seats in the next Olympic tournaments. The committee has long before informed the public that there are only two spots available for the 2016 event. In the bid in Switzerland, squash and lightweight squash raquets were represented, along with six other sports. These include ball sports such as baseball, softball and rugby. The martial arts group also bid for the inclusion of karate to be one of the main events. There was a wild card group that bid for the addition of roller sports events.
The committee has got some work in their hands. They have declared to announce their decision by October of this year. Squash organizers and players alike are crossing their fingers to globally promote the sport.
